Medical imaging is often an integral part of clinical research and clinical trials, and the requirements for research-related imaging often differ from standard clinical imaging.

Clinical trials use imaging to:

  • Determine patient eligibility
  • Measure response to treatment
  • Determine if an endpoint has been met

Research imaging needs to be performed in accordance with protocol guidelines, and image data needs to be distributed in a manner consistent with HIPAA, IRB, and protocol specifications. Providing de-identified image data to researchers requires specialized expertise. Simultaneously accommodating imaging for day-to-day clinical care and clinical research trials can be a daunting task for a medical center. Failing to meet the imaging guidelines imposed by a clinical trial will result in additional effort for staff, and can jeopardize the integrity of the research, cause patient removal from the trial, and tarnish the reputation of the institution.
